9:04 pm - Greetings

still_borne
Hi all! Just another newbie :)
Been playing violin for about 18 years or so. Grew up in orchestras and other classical ensembles. Now I play electric in various other genres.
I'm hoping to do more recording soon and am wondering if there are any free band/music hosting websites around other than myspace.
Anyone know of any?
Thanks heaps!

Hello! I'm trying to learn this song myself by ear without any sheet music, and on that site, there is a little demo of the song. What I'm having trouble with is the little triple it part you'll hear right at the beginning of the piece. For whatever reason, I can't get that part of the song down pact. If anyone can describe how to play it, that would be great. Thanks!

3:48 pm - Vibrato

iloz_1
Hi, I'm new!

I've played the violin for a while. I started when I was 10 and put it down for a couple of years. I recently picked it back up, and I'm a little rusty but I'm also trying to learn some new techniques such as vibrato. When I started practicing from tutorials I found on You Tube I could do it in a slower way but I have trouble speeding it up! I just can't get my hand to flow as well. Can any one lend some advice on how to speed up vibrato?

I just took on a new student, an 8th grader who has been playing violin in her school orchestra for 2 years. she hasn't had a lot of individual attention, so we have a lot of ground to cover position-wise... but she has a remarkable ear and is constantly figuring out movie and video game themes. i'm trying not to overwhelm her with technique right off the bat, and i'd like to find her a piece to play that would be enjoyable for her, but not too difficult so that we can focus on position for a while. does anyone have any suggestions? something familiar would be perfect, but i don't really know where to look for arrangements of movie or video game music. i think she's had some experience with shifting in school, but i would prefer to start from the beginning with that, so something that stays mostly in first position would be ideal. if you know of any fun, easy, contemporary-sounding pieces, that would be great too.

4:09 pm - a new DVD series on teaching and playing violin

violinforhim

Check out this new DVD series on all the basic techniques of violin and viola playing and teaching. Valerie Gardner, who graduated from the Curtis Institute of music with Jascha Brodsky (Hilary Hahn's teacher), and who played with the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra before "retiring" to teach, explains all the ins and outs (lots of detail) of virtuostic playing in a simple, easy-to-understand way. The DVD quality is extremely good and there are lots of demonstrations that keep it upbeat and interesting. www.violinvirtuosity.com

11:35 pm - for those of you who like nadja salerno-sonnenberg:

mapleleaf_gal
i got to see her play the bruch violin concerto today with the seattle symphony. one of the best performances i have ever seen! i have seen the seattle symphony many times before. they have always just been ok. but this performance was exceptionally good! i have also seen her perform two other times. again, this was the best performace so far.  here are a few pics of the signing during the intermission (sorry for the links, too lazy to upload the actual pictures)

i should add that i am a violin maker. i decided that i'd have her sign the inside of the current violin i am making. i have not decided if i am going to keep it for myself or sell it. but it was so worth the look on her face when i handed her a half of a violin and a sharpie! priceless.

12:33 pm - Electric Violin...?

emmavie

Hi, I'm new to this community, but I'd like to pose a question. :)

I live near Tacoma, WA, and I've been wanting to get an electric violin for a long while, now. I've been playing for about 10 years now, I'm 16 now, and I was wondering, where can I go to play an electric violin, and buy one? I found some beautiful inlayed violins on ebay, but I don't want to buy anything I can't play first. I've got a 20% off any purchase coupon at Guitar Center... do they sell nice electric violins?

Thanks. <3

I am really really in desparate need for some good fingerings on the third movement of the Mendelssohn violin concerto. If not good, at least different options I can try...

The run on the first page, starting on low B on the G string, ending on a high harmonic E on the E string, consisting of almost all broken 3rds, with random 4ths in there... I need ideas other than the slidy 2-2 2-2 fingering that's on multiple editions published.... anyone have good ideas???

I see what Sarah Chang or Kyung Wha Chung is doing on youtube videos, and they are different from what I am doing, but they are too fast for me to actually catch what they are doing....

Any help would be great!
